Mr. Bold is one of the political leaders of the democratic revolution of Mongolia held in 1989-1990.
As the first ever Secretary General of the Mongolian Student Union, he has actively led Mongolian students and youth to vanguard the social changes and played an important historic role in peaceful victory of the democratic revolution.
Mr. Bold is serving his fifth term as a parliament member since 1990, the year of the first free democratic elections took place in Mongolia. In 1992, he took part in the adoption of the first democratic constitution of Mongolia. As a member of the Parliament of Mongolia, he worked actively with the Inter-Parliamentary Union and was elected as a member of the Executive Committee and the Asia-Pacific Chairman of the Union for the 1999-2000.
He has also served as Chairman of the Mineral resources and Petroleum Authority in 2004-2008, Minister of Defense in 2008-2012 and Minister of Foreign Affairs in 2012-2014, meantime his service as a member of parliament in those years.
Along with his staunch activities for strengthening of the Mongolian democracy, Mr. Bold is a strong human rights activist as well. He was the very first Chairman of Amnesty International Mongolia and has played a crucial role to build legitimacy of Amnesty International in the country.
Mr. Bold has achieved tremendous success in business. He is founder of the Bodi Group, one of the country’s biggest conglomerates. He also co-established and chaired Golomt bank, the third biggest commercial bank of Mongolia. During his tenure at the Golomt bank, Mr. Bold served as President of the Mongolian Bankers Association to strengthen a newly born organization to be the main self-governing body of the industry.
His father Dr. Luvsanvandan Sonom was one of the famous Mongolian progressive intelligentsia.
